Poverty in Chicago Article

Explain what you read about the correlation between crime and poverty in IL.  Is it shocking? What do you believe needs to be done about this "war on poverty"?

  1. To be honest, no, the correlation is not incredible surprising to me, especially after talking about it in class for the past week or so. The article describes a detailed study about the link between poverty and crime in Illinois. Like I said earlier, I knew Illinois was bad in our help of poor people and they have some serious crime problems. The TED talk that we watched in class was much more revealing to me than this article was. At least in my opinion, LBJ's war on poverty was successful in reducing poverty throughout the country, if Illinois can find the money, why shouldn't we do the same?

  2. People in poverty rely on crime as a way to pay their bills because of the low income jobs as the alternative. These people rely on these illegal alternatives and it doesn't shock me because they are getting an inadequate education so they start on the bottom and see money as the top so they will do whatever they can to be on top. I think proper education will combat the war on poverty better than the mass incarceration we are using now.

  3. Poverty heavily correlates with crime. For example it explain how when a young person is very poor, they almost have no choice to either pick up a gun or sell drugs. To me it isn't shocking because people are doing the best they can and trying to make sure themselves and their families survive. I believe that the poverty number should be lower, so more people can get it and that their should be more public programs for those in poverty to help prevent them from committing crimes.

  4. The correlation between poverty and crime is strong. Based on the findings in this article and the discussion in class, we can see how people rob, steal, kill, etc. They do these acts as a cry for help on their poverty stricken lives and to show why they do these things to provide for their family. I hope one day we see another role player as Lydon B. Johnson who will step up and fight to end poverty and crime.

  5. The correlation between crime and poverty in Chicago wasn't shocking to me at all. I knew that individuals didn't make enough money or get in trouble and find themselves in a place where they don't want to be and some join the wrong group of people. What I believe we need to do to end this war on poverty is to help individuals in low income neighborhoods and offer tax breaks government housing to help them get back in the work place.

  6. Poverty comes from not having the nesscarey resources to survive. When people turn to violence it's because of they become criminals. These people who live in poverty try desperately to provide for their families. I believe we must stop poverty from spreading and once that's done, we must destroy poverty for good.

  7. The people who are committing crimes don't know what else to do. They get poor education. No one wants to teach them to do better. And I'm not shocked at how many people are involved with crime when they come from poverty. I believe that people need to get over whatever they have whether it is fear against these people who are committing crimes and realize they just need help. Take the time to change their lives and make them feel like they can do way better for themselves and that they can go somewhere in life.

  8. I think that poverty and crime can go together fairly often, but that’s not always the case. I understand why someone would feel the need to commit crimes in order for them to survive and I wouldn’t say I really can blame them for it, I mean honestly if things got really bad for me its possible I’d consider doing whatever necessary to get my resources. It is really sad that people have to commit crimes based on their living and financial situations, but I'm really not that surprised. The fact people can't get proper training and education impacts the way they get employed or whether they can even get the chance. Obviously without a job people aren't going to be able to afford things they need. Like Ms. Cook said once you're in poverty it's very hard to get out and if things don’t get cheaper, and employment doesn’t become more feasible, then a lot of people will be or will continuing to be struggling in our world today.

  9. The correlation with crime and poverty isn't that surprising. What does surprise me is everyone doesn't do a lot to help because, "it's not there problem." Even though one day those poor kids could break in to there house and some how it's the kids fault. Why are we incriminating lower class, and race because there is only one race, the Human Race, so instead of abandoning and killing each other we should make the world even. Aliens see use killing each other then they will think they can just inhabit our plant that's not what I want.
